George
Kashou
Of Mediterranean
heritage, George Kashou grew up in a family that practiced
good nutrition, long before the topic became mainstream.
He, his wife and two adult daughters still dine on this
healthy cuisine.
George's
idea of exercise and relaxation are one in the same. He
enjoys projects that require physical labor, such as landscaping
and gardening. He maintains a large organic garden that
feeds five families with plenty of leftovers for co-workers.
His idea of recreational heaven on earth is downhill skiing.

A lifelong
entrepreneur, George is quick to recognize opportunities and implement
ideas. Twenty-five years ago he and his brother John started Kangaroo,
a small bakery. George and John set out to Americanize pita pockets,
an ethnic specialty bread with limited distribution. Along with
producing a high quality pita pocket that was easy to use, they
received a federal patent for the "greatest innovation since sliced
bread," a pre-opened pita that fills without tearing. Today they
sell their pita pocket breads -- the #1 brand in the U.S. -- in
over 9,000 retail stores here and in Canada. George is the vice-president
of sales and marketing for Kangaroo
Brands.
But despite
these accomplishments, George felt more needed to be done. He
was disturbed by negative influence and lack of safety in fad
diets. He believed they preyed on too many people, including members
of his extended family and friends. He recognized a need for a
sensible approach to weight loss and decided write a book on nutrition.
The result can be found in The Pocket Diet.
